Does peanut butter cause acne? This is probably one of the oldest and most common questions when it comes to acne.
I know you’re hoping no for an answer. Of course, you love your gooey, tasty peanut butter spread all over your toast and topped with slices of banana in the morning.
Well, I hate to be the bearer of the bad news, but there are foods that we love and enjoy eating and at the same time cause your skin to breakout – this includes your favorite peanut butter.

Why Eating Peanut Butter Could Give You Those Nasty Acnes
Unfortunately, some contents of peanut butter can cause your skin to breakout. It doesn’t only potentially trigger pimples but can even make your present acne worse. And this doesn’t end there, it can as well delay the time it takes for your skin to heal.
But how exactly does peanut butter cause acne?
1. Peanuts are loaded with androgen.
Androgen is actually a type of hormone which can cause your skin to produce more oil. The more your skin is producing oil, the more it will be risky to have your pores clogged. And we know for a fact that clogged pores can eventually lead to breakouts.
2. Peanut butter is rich in Omega 6 fatty acids.
In my previous article “Does Fish Oil Cause Acne?”, I’ve discussed how our body requires a balanced ratio of Omega 6 and Omega 3 fatty acids. But since peanut butter is loaded with Omega 6, eating too much of it will shift the balance. Your body will have more Omega 6 than Omega 3, which will lead to inflammation that may trigger your acne from breaking out or worsen your present skin condition.
3. There’s plenty of sugar in your peanut butter.
Whether the manufacturer is using refined white sugar, cane syrup or molasses, too much of it is going to be bad for your skin. Sugar is actually one of the most acne causing products for a lot of reasons.
For instance, refined white sugar’s glycemic index is high enough to cause a spike in your insulin level. Once your body has an overabundance of insulin, your whole system will consider this as stress and it will engage in fight response. The stress hormone cortisol will be released from your body which will then trigger inflammation and your skin from producing so much oil.
Do you know how much sugar can be found in most jars of peanut butter? A whopping 15 grams of refined sugar – this means that there’s a minimum of three grams of sugar in every normal serving or about two tablespoons. So if you regularly consume more than the recommended serving, your skin will suffer the most; you will see the negative effects pretty quickly.
4. Peanut butter contains too much salt
Peanut butter has so much salt on it. If you are experiencing kidney or thyroid problems, this will not help your situation. Too much salt will only mess up your thyroid and when your thyroid is not functioning properly; your body will be producing excess sebum.
We all know what happens if your skin is producing so much sebum; it will cause inflammation and acne will then spring up.
5. That thing you pair with peanut butter can also cause acne
It’s pretty common for us to look something that we pair with our favorite butter. We often choose bread or crackers; unfortunately, both of them have gluten content. Gluten is also among the acne-causing foods you need to avoid.
Since gluten molecules are difficult to be properly digested, your immune system will consider this as something harmful. Hence, it will trigger two responses that are directly acne causing: your blood sugar level will increase and since your immune system has been stimulated, you will be prone to inflammation.
Best Alternatives to Peanut Butter
The thing about peanut butter is that most manufacturers add fillers, sugar, carbohydrates and other additives to improve flavor and texture of the butter. Unfortunately, this only means your skin will be triggered to produce more oil, clogged pores, inflammation and the worst of all, acne breakout.
The best thing you can do is to look for an all-natural and organic peanut butter. If you can’t find one, then start learning how to make peanut butter at home as long as you have either a high-speed blender, food processor or a peanut butter machine.
I know you are going nuts thinking you won’t be a having a dose of your favorite nutty butter. Well, worry not; there are peanut butter alternatives that are skin friendly like walnuts, almonds, pecan, cashew and macadamia nuts. These nuts can also be bought in butter that tastes really good too. You can also try sunflower seed butter, coconut butter, and pumpkin seed butter; they all taste just as delicious as peanut butter but with much lower calorie contents and sugar level.
Just remember that you still need to consume your homemade peanut butter as well as these alternatives moderately since they are still from nuts, which means they still contain Omega 6 fatty acids that can cause inflammation.
Now that you already know how does peanut butter cause acne, it would only make sense that you start cutting it out from your daily diet, especially if you are prone to breakouts. But if you think you can’t do this, I suggest you just stick to the recommended serving.
